Today we had a fantastic visitor! Nigel Goulding from Rochdale Borough Council came in to speak to Year 5 all about recycling and what we can do for the planet! We had so much fun and learnt many things about our waste and what happens to it after we're done with it. We learnt all about the small steps we can take to make our Earth happy and healthy again :) 

Year 4 River Walk (Geography fieldtrip), by Miss Hirst

This morning, year 4 went on a walk through Rochdale to explore the River Roch! Both 4H and 4R spent time looking at differences between a canal and a river and we looked at the speed of the water and the direction in which it flowed. We also looked at and spoke about the flood barriers/ defences and why they are important near the Riverside building. Despite a bit of rainy weather we all enjoyed the walk and here are some pictures of our visit.

In English this week and last week we have spent a lot of time, as well as during our history lessons last half term, finding facts out about life in Ancient Egypt. We have focused on Tutankhamun and looked at his life. We carried out some fun fact finding lessons and then used the information we had learnt to create a written biography and then we turned our work into some biography booklets. Here are some pictures of the work each table completed!

Today, 3J created their sandwiches using the breads and fillings they had requested and planned for. They used all the skills they had learned over the last few weeks such as, how important hygiene is when dealing with food and accurate cutting skills.

In preparation for designing and making our own sandwiches, 3J have been practising some key skills. Before we started, we talked about the importance of hygiene: tying hair back and hand washing. 

We then practicsed 5 keys skils: spreading butter with a knife, peeling (carrots), grating (cheese, slicing (cucumber) and dicing (pepper). We talked about the importance of safety and doing things slowly and carefull when using knives, graters and peelers.

On Wedesday we perfomrmed our Nativity play to our families! The children were all amazing; they used their loud voices, joined in with all of the singing and the actions, we are so proud of them!

Our Whole School Challenge was How can we help Santa to deliver all of the presents?

In Year 3, we asked, "How can Santa's elves reach the top of the tallest tree?"

On Thursday we had a Design Technology Day. It was a very busy day setting up for the Christmas fair so we shut the door and concentrated on designing,planning and making. Our task was to make a working musical instrument. Have a look at our photographs.

Rainbow Challenges, Trips and STEM Week, by Miss Sheldon

We have had a busy and exciting two weeks in Reception, learning about autumn and exploring the seasonal changes outside. Last week was STEM week and the children designed and created a sleigh and a ramp for Santa and tested it out and the children really enjoyed this activity. We also had our second visit to Church for our Christmas services and the children have been completing our rainbow challenges in the classroom.

This morning, year 4 completed their first class assembly for this academic year on 'The Importance of Light'. It was lovely to see the amount of time and effort that each and every pupil had put into learning their parts and it was also nice to see many smiles on faces when they had finished saying their part in front of the rest of the school and any parents/ carers who came to watch. Well done year 4! We are super proud of you!

Today, we had a lovely winters walk to St Chad's church for christmas service. We listened to the christmas story and discussed happiness and joy. We finished with some lovely prayers written by the children.

Last week was also our schools' STEM week. STEM stands for Scinece,Technology, Engineering and Maths. This year the STEM team decided on  Christmas themed activities. We researched, planned,designed and made things that would help Santa on his travels. Year 5 were tasked with Christmas headlights for the sleigh.  Look at our photos to see what we made.

Last week all the children had lessons in riding a bike. The instructors were very impressed with the childrens' excellent behaviour. The instructors were also impressed by the children' perseverance. Some children were even steady enough to ride on the public roads. Well done everyone that's a life skill you have grasped this week!!!!!!

Last week, 4H took part in the Stem project. The whole school project was to help Father Christmas deliver his presents and the task for year 4 was to help the Christmas tree light up. Despite not working properly, year 4 still had fun creating their project!
